Course Outline 

This course is designed for participants to better understand the possibilities for environmental damage, property damage, lost productivity and even injury or death when dealing with hazardous products and materials at work. Hazard identification and the steps taken to minimize the risks associated with identified hazards are a critical component of working safely. A hazard or risk assessment and control plan will provide the basis for the requirements needed to work safely. These plans require continuous evaluation to ensure risk assessments do not change and that new hazards created by process changes are identified. Most importantly, to achieve the level of safety that one need, every employee must be on the same page and well informed  so as to avoid any incident which could bring chaos.

Course Objectives 

The objectives of the course are to enable participants to:

• Identify characteristics of hazardous chemicals
• Define policy context of sustainable management of POPs
• Identify the legislative framework of hazardous wastes management
• Acquire knowledge on safe procedures with hazardous chemicals
• Understand how to manage household chemicals

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Know the characteristics of hazardous chemicals currently in use, including POPs
• Understand and apply the policy context of sustainable management of POPs in Mauritius
• Understand the legislative framework of hazardous wastes management in Mauritius
• Come up with a sound management of hazardous chemicals at the workplace
• Understand and put in place a safe procedures with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory setting
• Gain knowledge on how to manage household chemicals
